Moses & Krishna – Different Religions, Different Stories, Same Elements

At first glance Moses and Krishna are names synonymous with religions at the opposite ends of the spectrum from each other. While one is at the heart of the monotheistic traditions the other is the corner stone of one of the oldest practiced polytheistic religions. One emanates from the banks of river Nile and ends in the Sinai desert while the other originates from the fertile plains around river Yamuna and finds its way to the Arabian Sea coast. Moses was a human chosen by God as his Prophet while Krishna is considered as an incarnation of God Himself. The followers of both have spent millennia trying to prove the other wrong. But go beyond the labels of the religions, and you will find startling similarities between the elements of both stories.

Moses was left adrift by his mother when he was 3 months old in a reed basket because the Pharaoh had ordered that all Hebrew male babies be killed. The uncle of Krishna, Kans too had ordered that all male babies born to his sister Devki be killed at birth and when Krishna was born his father Vasudev carried him across the Yamuna in a reed basket. Hence both babies were separated from their natural mothers due to an eminent threat on their lives and both babies undertook this journey on a river in a basket.

Moses was raised in the household of the Pharaoh (according to Islam it was the Pharaoh’s wife who adopted him while according to the Judaic version it was the Pharaoh’s daughter). Regardless of who raised him the fact remains that he was raised as the family member of the very person against whom he would eventually revolt and from whom he would later liberate his people the Israelites. Krishna too was related to the very person whom he was destined to kill i.e. Kans the King of Mathura and liberate the oppressed people of that land. Both of them ended up having 2 mothers, one who gave them birth and the other who raised them with love.

Moses and Krishna both left the land where they spent their childhood in order to rescue their people from cruelty of their rulers. Moses led his people to the Sinai from where his people crossed the River Jordan and Krishna left Gokul where he was raised to Mathura where he vanquished his uncle.

The most famous scene of the Exodus is where the waters part for Moses and his people as they are chased by the Pharaoh and his army. Interestingly there is a similar incident with Krishna as well. After Kans was killed his wife swore revenge on Krishna and her brother waged endless wars against the kingdom of Mathura. Tired of years of conflict, Krishna took all his people and came to the coast of the Arabian sea near the delta of the Godavari. Here he asked the sea to give his people shelter and tradition says that the sea receded and the land revealed is what we know today as Dwarka. Here Krishna spent his last days as the King of Dwarka.

Whether we are talking about 2 different stories or if we are actually looking at the same myth being adapted across cultures separated by thousands of miles and several millennia, we do not know, nor do I want to venture there. However there is one thing which we can be certain of and that is when people look below the surface, when we keep our sentiments on the side, when we control our knee jerk reactions to other religions and are able to study things objectively, we can find similarities even between opposites. And therein lies our hope for peace, tolerance and coexistence.

it is true we always see the the things from lenses of our rock hard ideas implanted through particular set of teachings. why we think and act like this is becuase we feel that we are right. this is the cause of all ills. we dont give room to others thoughts and feelings. Hope things will improve. I must say the article is very well written brief but comprhensive.

I am aware of this similarity but would like to get the relevant citations from Hindu scriptures on the parallels for Krishna. I have the ones for Moses from Exodus.

Thanks,

Hi Guys,

Moses story is 101% ture, Krishna's story is totally fake.
Ask Hindu scholars how the creation of this world happen and they don't have answer of it.
They also declare Ganesh as there god, but listen to Ganesh history & you will laugh.
Don;t waste your time for thinking & working on Hinduism fake stories.
If you need knowledge of this world & hereafter then read Quran in your language which you can understand easily. You will get answers of all your questions.

very interesting.
I am a Hindu Brahmin, I have read some religious books other than Gita or Ramayana,of other religions.
I came across with Mosses story in three different books.their authors are known, they can be traced back to their origin.
Hence I trust them.Three different religions can't have so much similarity about the same person unless it is true.
The Krishna and Mosses story is so similar
Why krishna was unable to stay in Vrindavan or Mathura after defeating the than king Kansa of Mathura, why he had to leave inspite him being god(according to hindu scriptures)which adds more confusion.
All i will say to people, the truth is right there you have to find it yourself. Keep looking, so one day you can attain paradise.
Hell fire will be a thing difficult.

Pharaoh's daughter's name was Bitiya which is still a popular nick name in north India(e,g utter pradesh)literally meaning daughter in Hindi. Pharaoh and his people were worshipping different gods, makes me wonder if Hindus come from Egypt and or close by places.

for those who say hinduism fake stories it doesnt look to well for your own faith being that aspects of god and prophets in the bible and quran bear great resemblance to alot of hinduism fake stories that existed before christianity and islam

the thing about the quran its hard to follow a prophet that marries a 6 year girl consumate when she turns 9 even though he's 53 has 12 wives 1 of them being his daughter in law when the quran cleary says 4 also has concubines and sex slaves for himself and his army places a stone in the kaaba that clearly looks like a shiva linga which they pray too....feel free to research everything i said

Yuvan - I write about what comes to my mind. It is not about trying to convince people about a certain religion. I could have deleted your comments because they are frankly offensive to my own religious beliefs, however I won't because I do think you have the right to state your opinions just as I have the right to mine. I respect all religions and I would appreciate it if my readers do the same. Getting overly defensive and then attacking other religions as a counter strategy has brought nothing but misery to this world.

For those who read yuvan's comment in which he has raised the point of the Prophet's (PBUP) wife are being 9 years old here is a link which discusses and negates this point logically.

In opinion vedic dhrma is first religion in the world becuse in quran the vedas are called as suhufe ula(first book) and vedas are called as ADI GRANTH(first book),so i say that vedas and qurans are words of allha(permeshwar-rabbulaalameen).so in vedas there is discussion about rushi mamahe and that is totally rlated with mohammad(pbuh) and also there is discussion about ayodhya means in that place there is no war allowed and as we know that is macca where there is no war allowed
In vedas there is shloke ashta chkra now duara devana poorayodha means eight round and nine doors and we know that that place is macca whre there is nine doors and from one door to another door there is eight round. so we can say that VEDAS AND QURANS ARE WORDS OF GOD and ayodhya is macca, kalki avtar in purana, rushi mamahe in vedas is mohammad(pbuh).

I am proud to say I was a Hindu Brahman and now I am a child of God in Christ. Anyone who can post a comment like that belongs to the caste system and they deem other people as untouchables. You should be ashamed to claim that title.
Look at the story of ram and sita it is about a wife should be so obedient to her husband that story was all a form of control of women by their husbands even in the days of sati when the women were burned at the funeral pyre with their dead husbands is that religion. If ram was God then why did he have to get monkeys to build a bridge to help him fight a war to get back his bride? Wars are fought in the bible with the help of God and not monkey’s animal. Still today wars are being won by the help of God. In the end Jesus will return to be victorious.
Hinduism is so unreal if as one of my friends posted three different holy books talked about Moses what is Hinduism doing so different from the other religions?? In the bible every prophecy so far has come to pass and is still happening look at the war in process now with Israel and the land obviously the web is on Hindu people eyes. Christian people are not prejudiced but we are all called to spread the word of God and if you don’t receive it then we walk on shake of the dust and never enter that city or persons house again when you deny Christ. The story of Moses and Krishna is just a touch to the tip of the iceberg on how great the holy bible is try to read it my friend and try to prove the the resurrection never happened GOD bless you and remember we have peace not hatred to others. When anything happens in the world the Christian people run to help do you ever see more than a handful of Hindus helping oh just to reiterate the Hindu Brahman is so high he will not be caught dead helping any untouchable in his country or in any other place.

Hinduism, also known as Vedanta, is the oldest and original religion of mankind, for it is not a religion, it is a philosophy, complicated for a time of more intellectual and spiritual people, it's a way of life. Believe it or not Vedanta is 100% monotheistic. There is no believe in multiple Gods, only one God, Krishna.

As for the unintelligent, uneducated comments aforementioned above. Krishna did not create the caste system, people, specifically Monarchs and Royalty created the modern caste system. What Krishna Bhagwan created was a realistic approach to ensuring society was productive. Krishna never said that farmers could not be business men, or Brahmin priests could not be warriors. Every man had a duty, but every man and women could go above and beyond that prescribed duty.

More so, a massive amount of historical proof shows that the Ramayana, took place 90 million years ago. There is a bridge that connects India to Sri Lanka, NASA discovered this bridge from satellite photos. The Bridge is man made, as in the same stories that are told in the Ramayana. The Bridge is carbon dated to the Treta Yuga, 90 million years ago.

The Kaaba is a Vedic Temple, everyone knows that. India's empire spawned from modern day Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Soviet Union, Afghanistan, Saudi, Iran, Iraq, Italy and Egypt. The Kaaba houses a Shiva Ling, which Muslims kiss during Haji. Moreover, Muslims follow all the rituals of Hindu temples, by circumventing the Kaaba 7 times, cleanly shaving, and wearing white dothis.

Pre-Islamic Saudi, Iran, and Iraq were Vedic. Zoroastrianism took over Iran later, as well as Summerian.

Sanskrit is the oldest language in the world, the only perfect language with a binary value of 0. All of artificial intelligence, and computer languages are based on the language Krishna created, Sanskrit.

It is the Vedic priests who are one in the same in Egypt, hence Ra and the deviation between those who worshipped the Sun, and those who worshipped the Moon.

The only comparisons that are logical here are the stories of Moses, which are obviously copied from Vedanta, as the original Jews come from India, and Krishna's tribe - In his History of the Jews, the Jewish scholar and theologian Flavius Josephus (37 - 100 A.D.), wrote that the Greek philosopher Aristotle had said: "...These Jews are derived from the Indian philosophers; they are named by the Indians Calani." (Book I:22.)

Clearchus of Soli wrote, "The Jews descend from the philosophers of India. The philosophers are called in India Calanians and in Syria Jews.

Everything emmanates from India, even the story of Adam and Eve, and Noah's Ark. The great flood that every culture refers to is the flood of Dwarka, when Krishna descended back to Heaven. This massive flood took the western shoreline of Gujarat, India in a total of 12 km within 1 year! This flood made Gujarat and the rest of the west coast of India, inhabitable. Krishan's tribe, the Kalini (Jews) migrated west, led by Brahma and Sarasvati, aka Abraham and Sarai. There's so much more all of you should know about the cradle of civilization, religion, science, math, medicine, astronomy, philosophy, spirituality, language and intelligence.

Its totally accepted that prophet mohammad married 11 times .But it is also true that the women he married was most of them were widow or were very poor & who were really in need.If talking about his character we can know from history that he didn't have sexually contact between anyone whom he married later. He just have children from first two wifes.
If u really think this to be wrong then plz take accont of other religions like hinduism .we see in that; their lord used to have dozens of unmarried girls whom they fluated with and some lord count goes to 1600 thousand .
Though bro, I agreed that what ever i said later may be wrong becaue I didn't research about that.and so u r . U gays doesn't research anything about other and just use to say what ever u heard.I suggest u all to first study each part of life and the sitution that led to do so and then comment on them.

and krishna have said that in kalyug
there will come kalki avtar who is the last prophet(vishnus last avtar) and mohammad(PBUH) SAID THAT I AM THE LAST PROPHET.IF WE STUDIED the books of hiduism(arya aur sanatan dharm) in that book we will gate the name of MOHAMMAD(PBUH)SO WE SHOULD FOLLOW PEACE and dont say such words that feels to others and we should discuss only right path and we should have faith that our GOD IS ONE AND WHO IS THE CRATER OF THE UNIVERSE and he send the messangers in different nations in different languages but the aim of all the messangers is the same

Thanks for the wonderful post.
Related to the arguments which are posted in comments by different people I would like to say that hinduism/sanatan dharma was a religion created by people who were more spiritually developed than we are today.Sanskrit language was created or if we accept what brahmins say it was given to MANKIND by god.we cannot say with certainty whether moses or even krishna existed it is a matter of belief, but we can say this that
Such a man did existed on earth whose story has been adopted by others including Hinduism.I am not saying Hinduism is the greatest religion or Islam is ,but through my research I have come to recognize the Hinduism is definitely older than Islam .It can also be argued that hinduism being so old is bound to incorporate different beliefs.thus the Hinduism we see today was not the original created one but must be seen removing these later day additions.I will not comment anything about Islam coz frankly I have not studied this religion.

Dear friends,
Hindu or christain how can you insult the almight. Please try to follow and understand your religion carefully.
How can SHIVA been given a shape/gender and follows with wife and kids, when meaning of shiva means auspicious one/ pure one such a beautiful adjective is been given image.
Almighty ALLAH is pure/ auspicious image less, gender less, nor he begets nor begotten; same as SHIVA unborn. Later you people started insulting by associating parvati as if he is male etc.
Same with Christians saying JESUS as begotten son of god, please stop insulting almighty. who is way beyond all this.
Just imagine our earth as dot in front of SUN; SUN as dot in front of our galaxy; galaxy a dot in our universe. Almighty ALLAH/Pure One/SHIVA is way beyond all this. Please understand the fact.

The last messenger and last prophet of real God Ahmat who is another name is Mohammad didn't mention about Krishna, where did you get that from? The God I worshiping, believing in and praying didn't give birth or given by. His created whole Universe from Big Bang. His God of whole Universe and his God of Angels, Demons and Devil and also his God of everything inside the Universe but his been known only in three religions and that is in Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Krishna it's God of Indians (Hindus) and given birth by someone but truths is some Indians is Muslim and some Christians. I'm Turkish and Muslim. All Turks Muslims and I respect all other religions of the world. Their is Angel name called Gabriel and his the strongest, most powerful and greatest Angel of all and closest to God. If God order or comment Gabriel to destroy the Earth he will destroy it in 1 minutes maybe less than that. Gabriel can become invincible and he only sees people who is greatest among the human beings and that greatest human beings also smartest that human beings is prophets of God.

How can you relate to a formless being ? When i think of god..ithink of a glowing light or a pillar of fire or a burning bush...god cant be nothing surely ?

Anonymous said...

I see more a rapprochement with Jesus, because the two stories are partly the same.
1st point: the Origins
Before his birth, Jesus was prophesied as the new ruler of Israel. The king of the time, Herod I, hearing of the news by three foreign kings who came to seek and venerate the new lord, asked them to reveal to him the identity and the place where the baby would be born so that he too would return penance to the divine child .
But his inner plan was to kill this pretender to the throne.
Warned by the divine, the three foreign kings decided to turn back after seeing the child and leave Herod in his confusion.
Very close to his quest, Herod ended up losing his purpose, for God appeared some time earlier to the parents of Jesus and asked them to leave Israel urgently and go and take refuge in Egypt.
2nd point: the resemblance
Jesus and Krishna are two people of a similar universe by the fact of the "pastoral landscape" that their narratives offer us. A duo of shepherds, one close to his sheep, the other of his cows, who travel according to their adventures through a vast world.

But i think that Govind is a two in one : Jesus and Moses in one person and in one life.
Some aspect of Jesus, like is fisherman side, the temptation in the desert,... are absent of Gopala life.
In the other side, some Moses aspect are also the aspect of Krishna.

There is a strong indication by this similarities that both are referred to same person (for the believers ) and it can be a folk tale shared centuries ago-Hinduism is the only sensible way to teach humans about GOD at the beginning of Time-Later on as time progressed and human brain evolved the concept of GOD was delivered to them through messengers, nobles and Prophets-They were in all religions who taught Dharma and Salvation-So they all are right and light during the time it was revelaed -All religions from Hinduism to Islam got curroupted and Polluted due to greed, power money and Egos-After these messengers left the followers were corrupted and added their own narrations but the actual message says the same-We all are here from One supreme spirit and this is a temporary abode -We all are one-Love can only set us free
